Additional information

Indonesia's monetary authority issued this aluminum piece during the long recovery from the 1997–98 Asian financial crisis, which had collapsed the rupiah by roughly 80% against the dollar and triggered the end of Suharto's 32-year presidency. Aluminum was the practical answer to a denomination whose purchasing power had been so thoroughly destroyed that a heavier or more expensive alloy would have cost more to produce than the coin was worth.
