Issued on the centenary of Bose's birth, this commemorative was struck at a politically charged moment — the Indian government had for decades carefully managed Bose's official legacy, given persistent postwar controversy over his wartime alliance with the Axis powers and unresolved theories about his 1945 death in Taiwan. The 1997 release represented a relatively unambiguous state endorsement of his national hero status.
