Beschrijving keerzijde A left-facing bust portrait of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose occupies the central field, depicted wearing his characteristic military-style uniform and peaked cap. The portrait is rendered in moderate relief with fine detail in the facial features and uniform. Surrounding the effigy, the bilingual legend सुभाष चन्द्र बोस appears in Devanagari script along the left rim and SUBHAS CHANDRA BOSE in Latin along the upper right rim. Along the lower rim, the Devanagari inscription जन्मशती (centenary) is followed by the year 1997 and the word CENTENARY in Latin script, commemorating the birth centenary of the Indian independence leader.

Aanvullende informatie

Issued on the centenary of Bose's birth, this commemorative was struck at a politically charged moment — the Indian government had for decades carefully managed Bose's official legacy, given persistent postwar controversy over his wartime alliance with the Axis powers and unresolved theories about his 1945 death in Taiwan. The 1997 release represented a relatively unambiguous state endorsement of his national hero status.

The .500 fineness is notably low for a commemorative silver issue, a specification the Indian mint used across several 1990s releases to reduce production costs without abandoning silver entirely.
