The Quit India Movement — launched by Gandhi on August 8, 1942 — triggered one of the most widespread acts of civil disobedience in British India's history, resulting in the arrest of nearly the entire Congress leadership within 24 hours. The British response was swift and brutal enough that the movement was largely suppressed within six weeks, though it permanently damaged colonial legitimacy.
