The ₹ symbol itself dates this series precisely: India's rupee sign was officially adopted on 15 July 2010, designed by D. Udaya Kumar and selected through a national competition. Its appearance on the 100-rupee note beginning in 2011 made this the first circulating series to carry it. The symbol's incorporation required modifications to the intaglio printing plates already in production at SPMCIL's Nashik and Dewas presses.
