The Maldives Monetary Authority was established in 1981, replacing the Maldives Monetary Board, and Thomas De La Rue has printed virtually every modern Maldivian note series — a printing relationship that stretches back decades and reflects the limited options available to small island-state issuers with no domestic printing infrastructure.
P#22 ran for nearly two decades before being superseded, an unusually long issuance window that points to low counterfeiting pressure and stable monetary conditions rather than any deliberate policy decision. The watermark remains the sole listed security feature — modest by the standards of De La Rue's output during the same period for comparable regional issuers.
