This piece belongs to Russia's "Regions of the Federation" commemorative program, a sprawling series launched by the Central Bank in the 1990s to issue large-format silver pieces honoring individual constituent republics and oblasts. The Bashkortostan issue commemorates a republic whose incorporation into the Russian state dates formally to 1919, though Bashkir autonomy claims stretch back to agreements made with Moscow as early as 1557 under Ivan IV.
At over a kilogram of .925 silver, production runs for these regional issues were typically kept in the low hundreds, making secondary-market appearances infrequent.
