Additional information

Fujairah was one of the smaller Trucial States operating under British protection when it began issuing commemorative gold coinage in the late 1960s — a practice driven almost entirely by the international numismatic market rather than any domestic monetary need. These issues were produced for export and collector sale, not circulation, a fact that makes the choice of subject matter telling: Pope Paul VI's January 1970 visit to the Philippines was a globally covered event, and the Trucial States mints understood Western Catholic collector demand precisely.

Fujairah formally joined the UAE federation in 1971, after which these sovereign issues ceased entirely.
