The South African Reserve Bank issued this note to mark the centenary of Nelson Mandela's birth on 18 July 1918 — a commemorative purpose that nonetheless produced a fully legal-tender circulating note rather than a collector-only issue. It was paired with a 10 Rand commemorative of the same series, both released on that date in 2018.
Kganyago's signature appears here as Governor, a post he has held since 2014. The South African Bank Note Company, which has printed SARB issues from its Pretoria facility for decades, produced the run entirely domestically — one of the few major central banks with fully in-country security printing capability.
