Northern Bank's £100 note gained an unexpected footnote in December 2004 when the Belfast headquarters of the bank was robbed of approximately £26.5 million in Northern Bank notes — one of the largest cash robberies in British history. The 2005 series that followed was a direct response: Northern Bank withdrew and redesigned its entire note range, rendering the stolen stock worthless and unspendable.
This £100 denomination was part of that post-robbery reissue. The redesign was implemented with unusual speed given the scale of the logistical challenge, with De La Rue turning around new designs within months of the theft.
