The Lunar series struck by the Royal Mint for the British market launched in 2014 with this Horse issue, positioning the Mint in direct competition with the long-established Perth Mint lunar program. Britain's entry into the genre was notably late — Perth had been running its own lunar calendar series since 1996 — but the Royal Mint differentiated its product through the .9999 fineness standard rather than the more common .999 used elsewhere.
2014 was the Year of the Horse under the Chinese sexagenary cycle, the seventh animal in the twelve-year sequence.
