The Lunar series struck by the Royal Mint for the British market launched in 2014 with this Horse issue, positioning the Mint in direct competition with the long-established Perth Mint lunar program. Britain's entry into the genre was notably late — Perth had been running its own lunar calendar series since 1996 — but the Royal Mint differentiated its product through the .9999 fineness standard rather than the more common .999 used elsewhere.
