| Beschrijving keerzijde | The reverse presents a dramatic close-up rendition of one of Sir Edwin Landseer's iconic bronze lions from the base of Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square, London, depicted in three-quarter left-facing profile with an open jaw and richly detailed mane filling the left foreground. In the middle distance to the right, the neoclassical facade of buildings framing the square and Nelson's Column surmounted by its statue are rendered in shallower relief, conveying depth and perspective. The field is otherwise unlettered, allowing the sculptural composition full visual impact. The engravers' combined initials G.D.LC appear incused at the lower centre of the design. |
