Bank of Scotland's £100 note occupies an unusual position in Scottish currency: it circulates legally but is routinely refused by retailers unfamiliar with Scottish notes, a problem that compounds sharply at the £100 face value. The Bank of Scotland has issued its own notes continuously since 1695 — longer than the Bank of England has issued banknotes — but that history provides little practical help at an English checkout.
