Güstrow's municipal savings bank — the Städtische Sparkasse — issued this note during the acute small-change crisis of 1922, when German coin production simply could not keep pace with inflation eroding the value of existing denominations. Hundreds of German municipalities, utilities, and private firms issued their own Kleingeldscheine under similar pressure, making precise local attribution essential for serious Notgeld collectors.
The Hof- und Relatbuchdruckerei was Güstrow's own court and legal printing house, which kept production entirely local. That matters for condition expectations: provincial presses of this type rarely matched the ink consistency of Leipzig or Berlin trade printers.
