Itzehoe's 1921 Notgeld series sits at the tail end of the first wave of German municipal emergency money — by mid-1921 the inflationary pressure that had justified small-denomination Notgeld was already giving way to the hyperinflationary catastrophe that would consume the following two years entirely. W. Gente of Hamburg was a regional printer handling multiple Schleswig-Holstein municipal issues simultaneously, which accounts for the relatively consistent production quality across notes from different towns in this period.
The designer credit to E. Meyer of Itzehoe is unusual enough to note — local artist attribution on Notgeld is less common than it might appear, and suggests the town commissioned original artwork rather than pulling from stock vignette catalogues.
