Reverse description A detailed engraving of a period steam locomotive, representing the engine used on the historic Barcelona–Mataró railway line inaugurated in 1848, occupies the central field. A curved legend along the upper and lateral periphery reads 140 ANIV. DEL 1er FERROCARRIL ESPAÑOL, commemorating the 140th anniversary of the first Spanish railroad. Above the locomotive, the inscriptions ORO FINO 1 OZ. 0.999 and BARCELONA - MATARÓ appear, along with the issue year 1989. The founding year 1848 and terminal year 1988 are inscribed below the locomotive in the exergue area.
