The "Águila" series was introduced in 1991 as Mexico's answer to the Krugerrand and Maple Leaf, giving the Casa de Moneda a modern bullion vehicle to compete in international precious metals markets following the peso crises of the 1980s and early 1990s. The 1998 date falls in the middle of a low-mintage run — the series never achieved the distribution volumes of its Canadian or South African rivals, and annual figures for mid-series dates are notably thin.
Not to be confused with the older Centenario (50 Pesos gold), which trades on numismatic premiums as much as gold content. The Águila trades purely on bullion fundamentals.
