| Opis awersu | The obverse features the crowned coat of arms of Macau at centre, flanked by two kneeling winged angels: the dexter angel holds a cross-topped staff and the sinister angel holds an armillary sphere. Fourteen five-pointed stars are arranged around the periphery. The name 'MACAU' arcs along the upper legend in large raised letters, and the date '1987' appears prominently along the lower field. Macau's lunar series of the 1980s was produced in close coordination with the transition politics surrounding the 1987 Sino-Portuguese Joint Declaration, which formally set 1999 as the handover date. The Instituto Emissor de Macau leaned heavily into commemorative silver issues during this period — partly as revenue generation, partly as a quiet assertion of the territory's distinct issuing identity before that window closed.
KM#36 shares its specification with the contemporaneous British Commonwealth commemorative standard, a deliberate choice that made Macau's issues directly comparable on the international collector market.
