The 1981 Vatican coin series was issued under the shadow of an assassination attempt on John Paul II in St. Peter's Square that May — yet production continued on schedule, the FAO-linked "Feed the Hungry" theme carrying particular resonance for a pope who had made hunger and global poverty central to his public addresses since his 1979 visit to Mexico.
