The 1981 Vatican coin series was issued under the shadow of an assassination attempt on John Paul II in St. Peter's Square that May — yet production continued on schedule, the FAO-linked "Feed the Hungry" theme carrying particular resonance for a pope who had made hunger and global poverty central to his public addresses since his 1979 visit to Mexico. The FAO series, which the Vatican had participated in since the early 1970s, tied papal coinage directly to United Nations agricultural initiatives — an unusual alignment of ecclesiastical and intergovernmental messaging on circulating metal.
