The Banca di Credito Agrario di Ferrara was one of several regional Italian agricultural credit institutions authorized to issue low-denomination emergency tokens — technically "miniassegni" — during the acute coin shortage that plagued Italy through the mid-1970s. With the lira's purchasing power eroded and hoarding of metal coinage endemic, the Banca d'Italia tacitly permitted banks and commercial entities to fill the gap with these small transferable cheques, which circulated hand-to-hand as de facto small change.
Ferrara's agricultural credit bank produced relatively limited quantities compared to the major commercial issuers, making regional examples like this one harder to source than the better-known Fiat or Esselunga issues.
