Moldova's 2009 commemorative series drew on the manuscript tradition of the Moldavian Principality, particularly the chronicles produced under court supervision from the reign of Stephen the Great onward. Grigore Ureche's *Letopisețul Țării Moldovei*, compiled in the mid-17th century, was the first chronicle written in Romanian rather than Church Slavonic — a deliberate linguistic shift that historians regard as a foundational moment in Romanian literary identity.
The National Bank issued this piece during a period of active commemorative programming tied to Moldovan cultural heritage, with the chronicles series among the more historically grounded of those efforts. KM#51 was struck in limited numbers for collector distribution only.
