Obverse description The Zambian national coat of arms is centrally displayed, featuring a shield with wavy vertical lines representing the Victoria Falls, supported by a man in traditional dress to the left and a woman in traditional dress to the right. An African fish eagle with wings spread surmounts the shield, and a scroll at the base bears the national motto 'ONE ZAMBIA ONE NATION'. The country name 'ZAMBIA' arcs along the upper legend in large capital letters, with the date '1998' inscribed in the lower field.

Additional information

Zambia's 1998 coinage was issued against a backdrop of severe economic deterioration — the kwacha had lost roughly 99% of its value against the dollar since independence, and the 100-kwacha denomination, once meaningful, had been reduced to near-worthless pocket change by the time these were struck. Within a decade, the country would redenominate entirely, replacing 1,000 old kwacha with a single new one in 2013.
