| Aanvullende informatie |
Václav Hollar (1607–1677) was a Bohemian etcher who spent most of his working life in exile — first in Cologne and Frankfurt, then England, where he became engraver to Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel, and later wenceslaus hollar to Charles I's court. He is best known for his panoramic view of London made before the Great Fire of 1666, which became an essential document for reconstructing what the city looked like before the disaster.
This issue commemorates the 300th anniversary of his death. Hollar died in London in such poverty that bailiffs arrived to seize his possessions while he was still on his deathbed.
