Struck to commemorate Zog I's marriage to Hungarian countess Geraldine Apponyi in April 1938, this prova (pattern) issue was never approved for general circulation. Zog had spent years cultivating an image of European royal legitimacy, and the wedding — attended by Count Ciano representing Mussolini — was as much a diplomatic performance as a personal event. Within a year, Italian forces would occupy Albania entirely, rendering the monarchy Zog had constructed effectively ceremonial before it was extinguished.
Prova coins of this type were struck in extremely limited numbers for official examination and archival purposes. KM#Pr55 is among the more elusive Albanian pattern issues of the interwar period.
