Charles III consolidated Monaco's finances significantly after the 1861 treaty with France ceded Menton and Roquebraton in exchange for 4 million francs and formal French recognition of Monegasque sovereignty. The large-format gold 100 Francs piece was a direct product of that newfound fiscal stability, struck within the Latin Monetary Union framework that Monaco had effectively adopted by alignment with French standards.
The series ran across Charles's final decade, ending with his death in 1889 — though the last dated strikes precede that by several years, suggesting production tapered well before the reign closed.
