| Reverse description | A right-facing portrait bust of Helmut Schmidt, the former Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, is rendered in fine relief occupying the right portion of the field. He is depicted holding a cigarette to his lips, with rising smoke artistically engraved to the left of the portrait. The name HELMUT SCHMIDT curves along the upper right, the issue year 2018 appears vertically along the right margin, and his birth and death years 1918-2015 are inscribed in the lower left field. A decorative arc of dots frames the upper left portion of the design. |

| Additional information |
Helmut Schmidt governed West Germany from 1974 to 1982, navigating the oil shocks and the Baader-Meinhof crisis with a reputation for cold pragmatism that earned him the nickname "Schmidt-Schnauze." The Republic of the Congo has no historical connection to him whatsoever. This coin exists because the Congo issues small-denomination gold pieces under licensing arrangements with European bullion distributors — Schmidt's face here is a commercial decision, not a commemorative one.
