Obverse description Central field features a stylized West African ceremonial mask rendered in high relief, depicting an elongated face with abstract facial features, flanked by scrolled decorative appendages and surmounted by chevron-shaped motifs. The mask design is presented frontally and occupies the majority of the coin's field. The circular legend BANQUE CENTRALE DES ETATS DE L'AFRIQUE DE L'OUEST runs along the upper periphery, while the word ESSAI appears to the right of the mask in the field. The mint engraver's initials appear at the lower left. The design reflects the influence of traditional West African artistic forms, engraved in a bold, graphic style characteristic of Raymond Joly's work.
