| Obverse description | Central motif consisting of three giant eland (Taurotragus derbianus) depicted in profile facing left, rendered in fine relief against a background of stylized savanna grasses. The animals are portrayed with great naturalistic detail, their long spiral horns prominently displayed. The circumscribed legend reads REPUBLIQUE POPULAIRE DU CONGO along the upper arc. The engraver's signature G. B. BAZOR appears to the right of the central design, and the mint mark is visible at the base of the field. |

The Banque Centrale des États de l'Afrique Équatoriale et du Cameroun was itself a transitional institution — it replaced the earlier Institut d'Émission de l'Afrique Équatoriale Française et du Cameroun in 1961 as the member states moved from colonial monetary frameworks toward nominally independent central banking, while remaining anchored to the French Treasury through the CFA franc guarantee. This issuer was subsequently dissolved and replaced by the Banque des États de l'Afrique Centrale in 1972, making the window for coins bearing this exact authority name extremely narrow.
