The 1931 Iraqi coinage was struck at the Royal Mint as part of the newly independent kingdom's first national currency system, established under the Iraqi Monetary Law of that year. Faisal I had pushed hard for a distinct Iraqi currency to replace the Indian rupee-based system that had governed the mandate period — a tangible assertion of the sovereignty his government had formally secured when Iraq joined the League of Nations in 1932.
This obverse trial represents the approval process the Royal Mint conducted before committing to full production dies. Such trials for the Iraqi series are rarely encountered outside institutional collections.
