D. António, Prior of Crato, was the last serious claimant to an independent Portuguese throne before the Iberian Union swallowed the kingdom in 1580. His reign lasted roughly twenty days before Philip II of Spain's forces, commanded by the Duke of Alba, crushed his supporters at the Battle of Alcântara. António spent the following years in restless exile, receiving halfhearted backing from England and France — Elizabeth I and Henry III both found him useful as a diplomatic irritant to Philip without ever committing enough resources to restore him.
This issue belongs to the INCM's ongoing series commemorating Portuguese kings and pretenders, struck in .925 silver. The Gomes R89.02 reference distinguishes it from the base-metal circulation strike.
