Bartolomeu Dias rounded the Cape of Good Hope in 1488 — the first European to do so — opening the eastern sea route to Asia that Vasco da Gama would exploit a decade later. The 1987 gold striking is the rarest metal variant of this type, with the silver and base metal issues having circulated far more widely.
