Beschrijving keerzijde Commemorative design marking the 500th anniversary of Bartolomeu Dias's rounding of the Cape of Good Hope. A stylised map of the African continent dominates the centre, oriented with its southern tip prominent, flanked by two caravels with lateen sails depicted in profile. The explorer's name and the name of the Cape arc around the design, with the historically significant dates 1488 and 1988 appearing in the lower exergue, alongside the mint mark 'incm' and the engraver's name.

Aanvullende informatie

Issued as part of Portugal's "Descobrimentos" commemorative series, which ran across several decades and systematically honored the major figures and voyages of the Age of Discovery. Bartolomeu Dias rounded the Cape of Good Hope in 1488 — the first European to do so — opening the eastern sea route to Asia that Vasco da Gama would exploit a decade later. The 1987 gold striking is the rarest metal variant of this type, with the silver and base metal issues having circulated far more widely.
