Amadeo de Souza Cardoso died of Spanish flu in 1918 at thirty years old, leaving behind one of the most radical bodies of work in early European modernism — largely ignored in Portugal until decades after his death. This coin was issued as part of INCM's long-running commemorative series celebrating Portuguese cultural figures, which gained significant momentum following the 1974 Carnation Revolution as the new democratic government worked to reclaim and reframe national identity through art and history.
The .925 silver striking (KM#644a) is the premium variant; a base metal version was issued concurrently for circulation.
