| 裏面の説明 | The reverse presents a finely detailed portrait of Saint Gregory of Narek (Grigor Narekatsi), depicted as a haloed saint facing slightly to the left, holding an open manuscript in his hands. The figure is rendered in a style reminiscent of medieval Armenian ecclesiastical iconography, with flowing robes and a nimbus encircling his head. The Armenian legend 'ԳՐԻԳՈՐ ՆԱՐԵԿԱՑԻ. ՄԱՏՅԱՆ ՈՂԲԵՐԳՈՒԹՅԱՆ' (Gregory of Narek. Book of Lamentations) arcs around the upper field. The composition occupies the full coin face, with the saint's image set against a polished mirror field. The proof surface accentuates the fine engraved detail of the portrait and drapery. |

The "Book of Sadness" — Matean Voghbergutyan — was written by the 5th-century Armenian monk Grigor Narekatsi and remains one of the most revered texts in Armenian literature, functioning for centuries as both a devotional work and, according to folk tradition, a physical talisman placed on the sick as a curative object. This coin was issued as part of Armenia's broader commemorative program marking the 1000th anniversary of the book's composition in 1003 AD.
UNESCO proclaimed Narekatsi's work a masterpiece of intangible heritage in 2012, a decade after this coin appeared.
