Greece restored George II to the throne in 1935 after a rigged plebiscite — official results claimed 97.88% in favor, a figure almost universally regarded as fabricated under the Kondylis regime. This coin commemorates that restoration. By 1940, when it was struck, George II was presiding over the Metaxas dictatorship and within months would be fleeing a German invasion, making the triumphalist premise of the issue historically ironic.
