Issued as part of the RCM's annual gold $100 series commemorating Canadian historical subjects, this piece marks the Jesuit mission of Sainte-Marie among the Hurons, established in 1639 near present-day Midland, Ontario. The mission was deliberately burned by its own inhabitants in 1649 — not by enemies — as Brébeuf and Lalemant had been captured and killed by the Iroquois and the remaining Jesuits chose destruction over surrender. The reconstructed site, Sainte-Marie among the Hurons, opened as a living history museum in 1964.
