Niue's legal tender gold issues are produced under a longstanding arrangement with New Zealand, which remains responsible for Niue's defense and foreign affairs — an asymmetry that gives these coins their formal issuing authority without any corresponding domestic monetary infrastructure. The "Blue Marble" designation references the iconic 1972 photograph taken by the Apollo 17 crew, one of the few images in history to show Earth fully illuminated, and one of the most reproduced photographs ever made.
