Perth Mint's annual lunar and dragon-themed bullion and proof programs have been a reliable commercial vehicle since the late 1990s, but the 2022 dragon issue sits outside the standard Lunar Series calendar — it's a standalone release rather than a zodiac year piece, which the mint has increasingly produced to meet collector demand independent of the twelve-year cycle. The sixth portrait of Elizabeth II, by Jody Clark, was adopted by the Perth Mint later than many Commonwealth issuers, making its appearance on 2022 issues among its final uses before the queen's death in September of that year.
