Belize had only become an independent nation in September 1981 — meaning this 1980 note was issued while the country was still British Honduras, a Crown Colony. The Monetary Authority of Belize had been established in 1976, replacing the Currency Board, giving the territory its first locally-administered issuing body before independence was formally achieved. Thomas De La Rue's involvement was consistent with British colonial and former colonial practice across the Caribbean throughout this period.
The P#42 series represents the transitional moment between colonial currency infrastructure and independent monetary administration, with the Queen's portrait carried forward into sovereignty essentially unchanged.
