Surrounding the central motif is a decorative border composed of eight circular medallions, each containing an individual animal footprint or paw print in relief, separated by stylized grass or reed motifs. Liberia's numismatic program has long operated as a revenue-generating exercise rather than a reflection of domestic monetary policy — the country has used the US dollar in everyday commerce since the early 2000s, making its own coinage essentially a collector product from the outset. The cave lion (Panthera spelaea) died out roughly 13,000 years ago, leaving no particular connection to Liberian history or geography.
