The Battle of St. George's Caye, fought on September 10, 1798, was a brief naval engagement between British settlers and their enslaved Baymen allies against a Spanish fleet attempting to expel them from the Bay of Honduras. The Spanish force was larger by almost any measure, yet withdrew after roughly two hours — a result Belizean national identity has anchored to ever since. September 10th remains the country's most significant public holiday.
The 1998 issue marks the battle's bicentennial exactly.
