The Bank of China was founded in 1912 under the Republican government as a replacement for the Qing-era Ta-Ching Government Bank, making 2012 the genuine centenary — not a rounded approximation. Hong Kong operations have been continuous through several political ruptures that would have ended lesser institutions.
De La Rue's Gateshead facility, formerly the Portals subsidiary site, handled the sheet-fed production. The holographic stripe on commemorative issues from this period used De La Rue's proprietary GEMINI thread technology.
