The UAE declared 2018 the Year of Zayed to mark what would have been Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan's centennial — he was born in 1918 and died in November 2004 after ruling Abu Dhabi for 33 years and serving as the federation's first president from its founding in 1971. The commemorative program was sweeping, touching everything from postage to currency, with the Central Bank issuing multiple collector pieces across the year.
KM#121 is among the larger format silver issues from this series, struck at 60mm — a size that pushed the limits of standard coining presses and required dedicated production runs.
