Additional information

Morocco hosted the 9th Mediterranean Games in Casablanca in September 1983, the first time the Games had been held on African soil. The event was a significant diplomatic moment for Hassan II, who had spent much of the early 1980s navigating the Western Sahara conflict and international pressure — hosting a pan-Mediterranean sporting event was a calculated exercise in projecting stability. Bank Al-Maghrib issued this 100 Dirham piece specifically for the occasion, one of the relatively few Moroccan commemoratives of the period struck to .925 fineness rather than the lower standards used for circulating silver.
