Libya's dirham subdivision coinage was reintroduced in 2009 after decades of dormancy — the subunit had been effectively ignored in daily commerce since the 1970s oil boom rendered small change economically trivial. The revival reflected a broader push by the Central Bank to modernize the circulating coin series following years in which banknotes dominated all transactions.
