The Deutsche Notenbank was the central bank established in the Soviet occupation zone, and this 100 Mark note belongs to the series issued following the June 1948 currency reform — the eastern response to the Western Allies' introduction of the Deutsche Mark in their zones. The split currency effectively formalized the division of Germany's economy before the political division was even fully institutionalized.
A print run just over twelve million is modest for a high-denomination note intended to recapitalize an entire zone. Many were absorbed quickly into savings rather than active circulation, given the economic instability of the early DDR period.
