100 Denari Statehood, Pitu Guli

Issued to commemorate the 1903 Ilinden Uprising, specifically the short-lived Kruševo Republic that survived roughly ten days before Ottoman forces under Bachо Bazain razed the town of Kruševo. Pitu Guli commanded the rebel forces there and died in the fighting on August 12th — refusing to retreat when withdrawal was still possible. The Macedonian government has consistently elevated Ilinden as its foundational national moment, and this gold issue is part of a broader commemorative program that accompanied Macedonia's post-Yugoslav state-building efforts in the early 2000s.
