Brazil's 100 Cruzeiro note went through a prolonged production run split between two presses — the Casa da Moeda do Brasil and Thomas De La Rue in London — a division that created subtle but catalogable differences in ink saturation and paper texture between printings. De La Rue's involvement reflected a capacity shortfall at the domestic mint during the early 1970s, when Brazil's military government was pushing aggressive economic expansion and the money supply couldn't keep up with demand.
Aloísio Magalhães, one of Brazil's most consequential graphic designers, brought a rigorous visual intelligence to the series. He later became director of SPHAN, the federal heritage body, before his death in 1982.
